SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Museum in downtown Sacramento is highlighting women's stories and achievements, which is often overlooked in history books. The museum has a signature exhibit called "Women Inspire: California Women Changing Our World."
"There are a lot of times in history where women have been left out or seen as background characters and really they are main characters," said Jessica Cushenberry, volunteer coordinator and public program specialist with the California Museum. "The exhibit originally came out as a small, temporary exhibit. But it had such well regards that we made it into a permanent exhibit."
The museum partnered with California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom to launch the exhibit back in August 18, 2020. The exhibit features two sections called "Drive For Equality" and "Find Your Inspiration."
"We have an interactive screen, where you can learn about women from landmark events or you can look at timelines," said Cushenberry. "We try to position Women Inspire to be an exhibit that talks about women who have made great contributions across all types of areas, from history, women, the arts, music, food and more."
The exhibit tells the stories of more than 250 women from the 1700s to present who broke barriers in California history. It comes with inspirational stories and messages from trailblazers, like Dolores Huerta, Sally Ride, the Williams Sisters and many more.
