'100 Years of Palestine' | New exhibit in Roseville uplifts Palestinian voices

The exhibit will only be open Sat., Feb. 17 at the Tarbiya Institute in Roseville from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It's is free and for all ages.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — There's a new exhibit in Roseville dedicated to Palestinian people, history and culture. It's called "100 Years of Palestine."

Tarbiya Institute worked with other organizations throughout the country to present the exhibit. One of the goals is to combat misinformation and stereotypes.

"Educating our community and people outside of our community is absolutely necessary," said Navera Rehimtoola, chief communications officer with Tarbiya Institute. "The exhibit really provides an opportunity to connect with the actual true knowledge and history of the people. By learning about someone, you really do connect with them and that offers an opportunity for empathy and compassion."

Tarbiya Institute is an Islamic organization that focuses on "restoring the authentic image of Islam, and the empowerment of the Muslim individual through perpetual personal progress." The Institute provides religious and social services to help bring people together.

"The institute was founded and built to mainly serve Muslim communities," said Rehimtoola. "We are a family organization, and we really aim to provide programs and services that address the needs of all ages."

The exhibit includes historical images, Palestinian art and a community mural. There's also an educational video viewing room, opportunities to experience authentic Palestinian food, a silent auction and more.

"You'll see artifacts and memorabilia from Palestine," said Nazeela Awan, volunteer and exhibit coordinator at the Tarbiya Institute. "We will have interactive displays, where people can get to see some of the maps of Palestine and how it's changed over the years."

The motivation for creating the exhibit grew out of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. With the exhibit, the Tarbiya Institute is ensuring a space for Palestinian perspectives.

"Palestine is important to people of all backgrounds," said Awan. "One of the reasons to have the exhibit is to also showcase what's going on currently. That is also part of Palestinian history that's being built as we speak. One of the most important things is going to be uplifting the voice of Palestinians themselves."

The exhibit will only be open Sat., Feb. 17 at the Tarbiya Institute in Roseville from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is free and for all ages. To learn more about the exhibit, visit the Tarbiya Institute website.
