SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Railyards project is closer to coming to life, according to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.
At a State of Downtown event Tuesday, Kaiser Permanente announced it completed the purchase of approximately 18 acres at the Railyards for a brand new medical center.
“Thousands of people who live and work downtown will be able to access health services that span the continuum of care just steps from their jobs and homes," said Rob Azevedo, MD, Physician-in-Chief, Sacramento. "Whether they need emergency care, a routine health checkup, or highly specialized care, Kaiser Permanente will be the only provider downtown to offer the care when and where they need it."
Downtown Sacramento Partnership's Executive Director Michael Ault explained the addition of Kaiser means about 2,300 new jobs.
"I think downtown today is headed on a new path, and I think that we absolutely will create an opportunity for this region that will change the way down Sacramento is positioned," Ault added.
The new hospital wasn't the only announcement made Tuesday. Mayor Darrell Steinberg said the city's plan to attract an MLS team is still in the works thanks to a billionaire investor.
Ault told ABC10 the complete Railyard plan is still several years away from coming to fruition, but he did say construction for some of the projects will begin soon.
