ROSEMONT, Calif. — A 12-year-old student at Albert Einstein Middle School was hit by a car while attempting to ride their bike across a crosswalk in front of the school Thursday morning.
The driver did not stop after hitting the student and a hit-and-run investigation has been launched, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said the car was traveling eastbound on Mirandy Drive when it struck the student at a marked crosswalk. The driver allegedly continued heading in the same direction.
The student sustained moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital.
"Unfortunate accidents like this serve as a reminder for all of us, especially students and drivers, to be more mindful of safety in and near our neighborhood school zones," said Albert Einstein Middle School Principal Chase Tafoya in a statement. "Drivers should always use extreme caution and slow down, even when students aren’t visible."
The CHP is looking for a silver 2001-2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. They are asking for any witnesses or people with footage of the incident to contact the East Sacramento CHP office at 916-464-1450 or email tsenter@chp.ca.gov.
