2 indicted for child sex crimes after Yuba County operation. Investigators look for possible victims

During the investigation, a detective communicated with 58-year-old Kevin Gipson who was interested in meeting a 10-year-old trafficking victim for sex.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento County detectives are looking for additional unreported victims after two child sex predators were arrested in July and indicted Thursday following an undercover operation.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit was involved in a multi-agency operation in Yuba County.

During the investigation, a detective communicated with 58-year-old Kevin Gipson who was interested in meeting for sex with a 10-year-old being trafficked.

The sheriff’s office says Gipson purchased numerous sex toys, which he intended to use on the child. Gipson allegedly told the undercover officer he previously had sex with two underage children, had been convicted before and was no longer required to register as a sex offender.

The sheriff’s office says Gipson introduced the officer to his friend, 81-year-old Kenneth Lorenz, who also allegedly detailed his intent to engage in sexual activity with the 10-year-old.

The undercover officer then arranged a meeting with the Gipson and Lorenz. Investigators say Gipson met with the undercover detective the day of the meeting to drop off a doll for the child. He was then reportedly taken into custody.

A search warrant was executed at Lorenz’s home, which allegedly found sex toys and more than 1,000 files of child porn spread across flash drives and a laptop.

The sheriff’s office says the pair were previously convicted of sex offenses, which required lifelong registration until California adopted a three-tier registration system in 2021 that began to allow non-lifetime registrations.

A federal grand jury indicted the two men Thursday. They are reportedly incarcerated at the Sacramento County Main Jail and are ineligible for bail.

Detectives say there may be additional unreported victims and are asking anyone with kids who may have interacted with the two men to call the sheriff’s office at 916-874-5115.
