2 killed in Sacramento sideshow shootings

Neighbors in the area said one of the sideshows quickly grew to roughly 300 to 500 people.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Police Department is trying to figure out why two people were shot and killed and one left injured at sideshows within the city limits.

Early Sunday morning around 2 a.m., officers responded to the 2400 block of Seamist Drive in South Natomas to multiple reports of a shooting, and found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

First responders tried to save his life, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Less than an hour later just before 3 a.m., officers responded to Kelton Way and Main Avenue in North Sacramento to reports of a shooting. Two men were taken to the hospital; both suffered at least one gunshot wound. One man died from his injuries, while the other is in stable condition.

Trina LaFuente, who lives near the Seamist Drive area, woke up early when she heard the sideshow starting.

“30 to 40 people, and within minutes, grew to 300 to 500 people,” LaFuente said.

A few minutes after she stopped recording, the shooting took place. Fellow neighbor Jessica Pickett was awakened to the noise of the shooting.

“At some point, I heard somebody scream, but I didn’t know what was going on,” Pickett said.

The sideshow, which resulted in a shooting, was the second time in as many weeks, according to LaFuente.

“Two weeks ago, and that left a shooting, behind it following a police chase,” she said.

The neighbors are hoping something can be done to put a stop to the sideshow activity as the intersection of West El Camino Avenue and Seamist Drive is becoming a popular spot for the illegal activity.

“There was one two weeks ago, one month before that and one on Cinco de Mayo. There have been four or five of them since we moved in January,” Pickett said.

No information about what led up to the shootings has been released.

Police said there is an active investigation into the incident, and there are no suspects in custody nor a suspect description. Police remind people who participate, they can be cited and/or arrested, and your car can be impounded for 30 days.

There are laws in place where spectators could also face penalties.
