KNIGHTS LANDING, Calif. — Just three days after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a mobile home killing three people, residents in Knights Landing are demanding safety measures be considered along Highway 113.
"There's been at least five or six accidents since I lived here. There's people lives at stake off these highways and they just need to make it a lot safer so that we don't have to go through these types of tragedies," said John Nesbitt, who lives in the community where the crash happened.
According to CHP, there have been 79 accidents on Highway 113 during the last 3 and a half years. There have already been 11 accidents in 2019. The stretch of highway in front of the community, where the fatal crash happened Saturday night, is particularly vulnerable to accidents because of the sharp curves.
"It's a stretch where people can fall asleep, where drunk drivers can come off the road and hit another vehicle," said resident Candice Clay. "They just need to make it a lot safer so that we don't have to go through these types of tragedies."
Many residents have voiced their frustrations to Caltrans in hopes of a guardrail being built.
"Our top priority is safety. So if there's anything we can do there, we will do it. We're looking at all options...pavement markings, signs, striping. There's been a request for a guardrail. So, we'll look at all those things and see what makes the most sense," Caltrans Public Information Officer Steve Nelson told ABC10.
