Aftershock festival goers say thieves stole several phones during event

"I mean it must have been 50 people because, by the end of it, it was myself and a lot of people walking around being like, 'cell phone, anyone find a cell phone?"

SACRAMENTO, California — Thieves recently stole several cell phones from fans attending the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento.

Many fans said their phones were stolen from their pockets within seconds, with some saying it ruined their experience. They believe these were skilled thieves who knew what they're doing.

The festival last weekend drew thousands of fans from all around the United States. But what was supposed to be a good time for Jeffery Helton and his wife ended up being a headache when his personal and work cell phones were stolen.

"We were traveling from out of state. It was our way back to our Airbnb. It was how we got into the Airbnb. It was how I communicated with all my kids back home and checked with family who's watching them. It threw quite a few wrenches," said Helton.

The couple traveled all the way from Dallas, Texas. They said the theft happened on the very first night of the festival. However, they weren't the only ones who had to deal with this.

"You can tell these people were professional for how quickly and efficiently they were able to steal," said Helton. "I mean it must have been 50 people because, by the end of it, it was myself and a lot of people walking around being like, 'cell phone, anyone find a cell phone?"

Sacramento police said they are aware of the phones being stolen.

While attending concerts is fun, these events generally result in a large number of people being in close proximity, which creates an ideal place for personal property theft.

Police said people should always be aware of their surroundings, limit the size of property they take with them and use handbags or purses that have a zipper or locking flap. People can also carry wallets inside a closed coat pocket or front pants pocket.

Organizers of Aftershock and the upcoming Goldensky festivals said safety was their top concern and they're asking concertgoers to say something to a team member or public safety official if they see anything.
