16-year-old gang members lead deputies on chase that ends in fiery crash in Sacramento, deputies say

Deputies said the suspect's car caught fire after it crashed.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Teen gang members led deputies on a chase in Sacramento that ended in a fiery crash Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

A spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said the incident started in the area of Broadway and 37th Street around 3:30 p.m. while gang detectives were doing a proactive patrol in South Sacramento.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said the detectives saw a car with an equipment violation, a non-moving vehicle violation. They tried to an enforcement stop to contact the driver, but he said it led to a high-speed chase that went throughout South Sacramento and onto the freeways for about five to 10 minutes.

Gandhi said the chase came to an end after the car crashed near Fifth Street and X Street. That happened after the car had already crashed into two other cars along the way, according to deputies. The suspects jumped off the freeway embankment, about 15 to 20 feet, and tried to run away but were caught.

"A couple of interesting facts again, both of these guys juveniles, both of them validated gang members. One of them was just caught two months ago for doing the exact same thing," said Gandhi.

Gandhi added that the two suspects were live on Instagram during the pursuit.

"This is how not serious they took this. This was just a real live video game to them. It's kind of amazing that, again, they walked away safe from this, but hopefully, they'll get locked up," said Gandhi.

The crash at the end of chase also saw the car catch fire and spark a fire on the freeway that temporarily shut traffic down, according to Gandhi.

Deputies were able to recover three firearms.
