Arrest made in 2016's shooting death of 3-year-old Melanie Martinez

An 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday by the Stockton Police Community Response Team arrested and booked on murder and attempted murder charges into the San Joaquin County Jail.

STOCKTON, Calif. — On Sept. 25, 2016, Melanie Martinez was sitting in the backseat of a vehicle when she was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting on the city’s Southside.

Nearly three years after her death, Stockton Detectives have made an arrest.

Throughout the investigation, Stockton Police detectives identified at least one person who fired a weapon that hit and killed the little girl near the intersection of Jefferson and Commerce Streets. This week, that person was arrested and booked on murder and attempted murder charges.

Three-year-old Melanie Martinez was gunned down in Stockton last month.

The 18-year-old was arrested Thursday, April 25, 2019, and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail. At the time of Melanie's death, police said he would have been a juvenile. According to the Stockton Police Department, since the suspect was a juvenile at the time of the crime, they are not yet releasing his have name or a mugshot.
