STOCKTON, Calif — After years of unanswered questions regarding what happened to 17-year-old Anthony Morones, one Stockton family is hoping their latest effort could lead them to an answer.
A new billboard stands along Charter Way in south Stockton, and the family of the slain teen is hoping it can refresh someone’s memory and bring them justice.
Morones’ family unveiled the billboard this weekend.
“I am just trying to get justice for him,” said Joseph Cisneros, Morones’ uncle. “Our hearts are just broken in many pieces. We are just trying to put it all back together.”
For most, it is a billboard, but for Morones’ family, they hope it was money well spent and a step closer to the answers that have been eluding them for years.
“Anthony is a cold case,” said Juanita Gonzales, Morones’ mother. “Why hasn't my son's case been picked up? Why has it not it been solved?”
Morones died from a gunshot wound to his chest. It happened nearly three years ago, in May of 2021, at the Sierra Vista Housing complex in south Stockton. The family says they do not know what led up to the shooting.
“I cannot sleep at night; my heart is broken. Why I want the perpetrator to come forward, give us justice,” said Gonzales. "He is living his life, and I have to bury my son, six feet under.”
The family described Morones as a kind, loving and respectful person who loved cars and music.
“He was a people person, very talkative,” said Pedro and Rachel Gonzales, Morones’ grandparents.
The pain and anguish are still fresh. The family feels helpless as other cases get solved, but theirs remains cold. They pray that whoever did this, or anyone with information, can come forward to relieve their pain and bring them closure.
“Tell us, why did you do it? I will forgive you. Please help us, find who did this,” said Pedro Gonzales.
“My heart is not going to rest until I get justice for him,” said Cisneros.
