WEST POINT, Calif. — A man was shot by Calaveras County Sheriff's Office deputies after a multi-hour long standoff Friday, according to a press release.

Officials say they were called to the 1000 block of Woodhouse Mine Road in West Point around 9 a.m. to serve a search warrant as part of an investigation into someone allegedly having illegal guns and threatening people in the area.

Once on scene, deputies say they tried to contact 40-year-old Michael Powell who was inside the home. Officials say Powell told them he had "no intention of exiting the residence or complying with their orders."

The sheriff's office crisis negotiation team began speaking to Powell, trying to get him out. At around 10:55 a.m., an hour after officials got to the scene, deputies say Powell allegedly shot several times toward one of the law enforcement officers cars.

Negotiations continues until about 5 p.m. when deputies used chemical agents in an attempt to get Powell out of the home. Officials say Powell left the home, shot at deputies "one or more times" and was then shot by deputies at least once.

Powell was taken to the hospital, it's unclear how significant they are. At this time, no deputies have been reported as injured.

There is no word on how many deputies fired their guns, but those involved will be placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. No other information is available at this time.
