SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento police are trying to track down the suspect in a robbery who pistol-whipped an employee.
The robbery happened Monday night at Chando's Tacos on Arden Way around 9 p.m. and was caught on surveillance video.
Lisandro Madrigal, owner of Chando's Tacos, says his employees are left shaken up. He says the woman who was hit is physically OK, but she and her coworkers were left traumatized.
In the 14 years Chando's Tacos has run its business off Arden Way, it's never experienced a robbery like the one employees experienced Monday night.
Madrigal shared surveillance video showing the robber pistol-whipping the cashier and then grabbing the cash register and running away.
"Most of my employees are my family, right? You know, the two most important assets are my employees and my customers, and I want to make sure that they're safe," Madrigal said.
Sacramento police said robbery detectives are working on the case but haven't been able to identify the man. At this point, he is considered the only suspect.
"This coward used a firearm and struck a female employee twice in the head, and so to the person that did this, I hope you're watching and I hope you do the right thing and turn yourself in," said Sacramento police spokesperson Officer Anthony Gamble. "If you don't, just understand that our detectives are relentless. We have some of the best detectives in this country, and they're going to be working around the clock to get you identified and to bring you to justice."
Police also said they're aware of two other robberies that happened at two other taquerias in North Sacramento Tuesday night. They are investigating and trying to figure out if they are all connected.
"We're asking the community to do the right thing. Somebody in the community knows who this person is. Somebody heard about it after the fact, and we're asking them to contact us whether it's contacting the police department directly or they can go through Crime Stoppers," Gamble said.
Madrigal says thieves also broke into the business about a month ago after it closed for the night. He's now considering only taking electronic payments. He has faith the robber will be caught soon.
"It feels really good that we're getting the support from the police here in Sacramento, as well as the community and you guys. I feel pretty confident that at least he's going to be hiding or leave Sacramento and go to a hole somewhere," Madrigal said.
As for charges, police say the suspect could be facing armed robbery and a number of other charges that would include felony assault.
They're calling on businesses to be aware of what's happening and call police if they notice something strange.
