Video shows man brazenly stealing chicken from Sacramento woman's front yard

The video shows him pulling a bag from his pocket and stuffing the chicken inside.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento woman said she was stunned after seeing security video of a man stealing one of her chickens out of her front yard.

The man is facing misdemeanor theft charges, but Aubrey Ash still has questions.

Ash has a special place in the backyard of her Southside Park home where her chickens, Strawberry, Sunshine and Little Moonie, roam. They've all been part of her life for three years. However, Moonie was particularly special.

"She was more of a person than a chicken I feel like," said Ash. "I’ve never met a chicken like that before. She would constantly be on my shoulder, on my head."

On Saturday, somehow, Moonie got out.

Security camera video shows a man cornering the bird in the alley and chasing her down.

"You can see in the video that she’s like running from him and trying to get back into the fence," said Ash.

The video shows him pulling a bag from his pocket and stuffing the chicken inside. Aubrey believes he killed her.

"It’s not OK to just decide to kill somebody’s animal. Somebody’s pet. Like even if he saw her as an animal, he knew it wasn’t his," said Ash.

She tracked the man down and called Sacramento Police Department. Police cited him for misdemeanor theft, but said they didn't think there was sufficient evidence to accuse him with animal abuse.

"It’s not just a 'wild chicken.' Those don’t exist in downtown Sacramento. Even if you just looked at her as livestock, you know she wasn’t yours," she said.

Police said they spoke with animal control to reach their decision regarding the lack of evidence for animal abuse.

The suspect was issued a notice to appear in court for misdemeanor theft.
