Child allegedly killed by mother in Reno was from Modesto area

The father said his former partner and child had taken off and he didn't know where they were until he got the call about his son's death.

MODESTO, Calif. — A Modesto father is reeling after his 9-year-old son was allegedly killed by his mother in Reno, Nevada Friday afternoon.

"It's not easy, so hard... you're just learning details here and there," said Suleiman "Sam" Alsubaihi, the child's father.

According to Reno Police Department, officers responded to a motel room along the 1100 block of East Fourth Street for a child who wasn't breathing.

The child was taken to a hospital, but died from apparent injuries. One person was arrested on suspicion of murder, the child's mother Ansonia Laws.

Alsubaihi identified the child as his son Amanpreet "Abraham" Alsubaihi.

"She strangled him and after that she called 911 and when the police show up there, or she even admitted on the phone saying that she did it... And she ended up killing him, saying she lost hope in life and stuff like that. I don't get it," said Alsubaihi.

Alsubaihi said he and Laws were partners who had been separated for a long time. He used to visit his son weekly while they were apart.

"I take him to the park, I walk with him, I just tried to do anything because I only could come and see him one day a week," said Alsubaihi.

He said, before Laws took off, she was temporarily staying at his home in Modesto for two years while he relocated. He didn't know where she went until he got the news.

"She was in Reno all this time because that's when I find out, the only time when I received the call from the... medical center that's telling me that my son passed away," Alsubaihi said.

He previously had been trying to get custody of his son, contacting Child Protective Services and police for help in recent years out of concern for Abraham's safety.

The investigation into the case is ongoing. Laws was booked into a Nevada jail on murder charges.
