ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol just released more than 20 minutes of dashcam video after a public records request from ABC10. It sheds more light on the deadly hostage situation and shootout at Mahany Park in Roseville back in April.
Police said it started when a CHP officer tried to serve a search warrant to 35-year-old Eric Abril. That's when police said he shot Officer Matthew Hiatt and took two hostages with him, husband and wife James and Patricia MacEgan. He allegedly shot them as well during a standoff with law enforcement.
James MacEgan did not survive.
The newly released video shows the, at times, intense gun fight with police before they were finally able to capture the suspect.
Abril faced a judge for the first time back in April. Audio recordings were not allowed during the hearing, but he appeared emotionless and only spoke to the judge when asked if he needed an attorney.
He said "yes" and went on to escape custody from Sutter Roseville Medical Center in the early hours of July 9. He was captured more than a day later in Rocklin.
Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo said the escape of the dangerous inmate "should have never happened." The Placer County District Attorney said Abril is facing multiple charges.
"Attempted murder on a police officer, he's charged with the kidnapping of one of the victims. He's charged with a murder of another victim and with an allegation that that murder occurred during the course of a kidnapping," said District Attorney Morgan Gire.
Gire said he's also facing firearm charges and court documents show he was wearing body armor and used a 10mm handgun.
