SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will seek the death penalty on the man suspected of shooting a Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Stasyuk.
Authorities are accusing 39-year-old Anton Paris of firing multiple shots that killed Stasyuk outside of a Pep Boys in Rancho Cordova back in September 2018.
Paris is facing murder charges, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. The DA's office confirmed Friday that, if convicted, Paris could face the death penalty.
Stasyuk had only been with the department four and a half years. He was also a liaison officer at Abraham Elementary School.
While criminals can still be sentenced to death, Gov. Gavin Newsom has made it clear he has no plans to authorize a death sentence while he's in office.
