Suspect in deadly Lake Berryessa shooting among those hospitalized | Update

The Napa County Sheriff's Office said it all happened around 5:30 p.m. at the Oak Shores Day Use Area in the 5500 block of Knoxville Road.

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. — The suspect in a deadly Lake Berryessa shooting was among those hospitalized after the melee Saturday evening.

The suspect hasn't been identified at this time.

“While that suspect/patient is still hospitalized and is improving, because they're not booked yet and for security of the hospital and the deputies detaining at the hospital, we're not releasing the name of that person or that hospital,” said Deputy Henry Wofford, spokesperson for the Napa County Sheriff's Office.

According to deputies, one person was killed and multiple others were hurt in a large melee between two groups at Lake Berryessa. It was reported around 5:30 p.m. on the west shore of the lake., along the 5500 block of Knoxville Road.

Wofford said it's not clear how the fight started, but he did say the two groups didn't know one another.

Officials said during the fight, one of the people involved got a gun from his vehicle and allegedly shot and killed the victim. The victim was identified Sunday as 39-year-old Andres Fabian Sandoval Garcia of Vallejo.

Law enforcement said the suspect took off but was later detained just north of the lake and taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Wofford said it's not clear exactly how many people were hurt during the fight., but there were other victims of stabbings and punching. Various people were taken to a hospital as a result.

The sheriff's office is still looking for more details surrounding the fight and deadly shooting, and they are calling on people who saw anything to come forward.

“We've interviewed several of them (lake visitors), but we believe there's more out there. Maybe some of them even captured some of this on their cell phone. So we're asking the public that has information to come forward and reach out to our detectives,” said Wofford.

No other information is currently available, but the incident remains under investigation.

“We take this very seriously and we want people to be able to enjoy Lake Berryessa safely,” said Wofford.
