88-year-old briefly held hostage, robbed after woman allegedly forces way into home

"The sign of the times, it's just not real safe to be in your own home anymore so. Particularly alone, for anybody really. We all have to be careful," said Fraser.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An 88-year-old woman is sharing the scary moments was robbed in her own home after a woman allegedly forced her way inside.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's office says it happened Thursday around 1:30 p.m. in South Sacramento near Florin Road.

They say the suspect was out on bail for the same type of crime.

Surveillance video captured the moments 88-year-old Lois Fraser confronted a woman standing outside her garage door.

"She had picked up a weapon, one of my hedge trimmers, so I had to say 'set the trimmer down. Set it down.' Which she finally did," said Fraser.

Fraser had spotted the woman a few moments before as she was getting ready to leave for the store Thursday afternoon.

The family says the woman came in over the fence from a back corner, walked up to a window and saw Fraser sitting in the kitchen by herself.

The grandmother says at one point, she tried to let the woman out of the backyard when she took advantage of the situation.

"She wouldn't leave so I said 'okay I'm calling the police,' so I came in the house. Well, she ran behind me and grabbed the door so we had to fight, and she fought her way in. And when I'm calling the police she's trying to get the phone out of my hand," said Fraser.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's office says 30-year-old Destiny Oakes then held Fraser in her kitchen. They say she grabbed her cell phone, stole her car keys and fled in the car.

"This woman had a felony warrant, had been arrested in 2022 for virtually the same type of crime: for kidnapping, robbery and a bunch of other felonies. So while she's out on bail, she's got a warrant because she didn't appear in court," said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were able to respond within minutes since they had a substation nearby. Oakes was arrested just blocks away.

Fraser's oldest daughter says she's angry the woman wasn't in custody to begin with.

"The climate right now is to just release all of these hardened criminals that have intent. They intend to harm. She intended to harm my mom, she intended to rob my mom. She should have never had the opportunity to victimize my mother," said Karen Alexandrou, Fraser's daughter.

As for Fraser, she says she now plans to move in with her daughter after living here for about 50 years.

"The sign of the times, it's just not real safe to be in your own home anymore so. Particularly alone, for anybody really. We all have to be careful," said Fraser.

The family says they're thankful for the fast response from deputies. The suspect is now facing several new felony charges.
