PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — Monday marked the start of a big trial in Roseville where a 20-year-old man is facing homicide charges related to fentanyl.
This is the first time someone in Placer County has been charged with murder for a fentanyl-related death. Carson Schewe is facing charges of murder in the death of Kade Webb in December of 2021.
12 jurors and 2 alternates were selected as the trial unfolds.
Because this is a trial related to drugs, potential jurors were asked questions about their drug use or family member's drug use. After several hours, a jury was selected.
Prosecutors and the defense were hoping to be able to give their opening statements, and Kade Webb's father was expected to give his testimony but time didn't allow for it.
Previously, prosecutors with Placer County had to convince a judge that Schewe knowingly endangered Webb for a murder charge to be filed.
During that time, District Attorney Morgan Gire shared evidence that two of Schewe's friends, including his girlfriend, overdosed before Webb.
Schewe has pleaded not guilty.
The trial is expected to start back up on Tuesday morning around 8:30 p.m., where the judge and jurors are set to hear opening statements and witnesses with their testimony.
