PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — Placer County officials voted to allocate $2.5 million toward a new two-story forensic lab for the Sacramento State Placer Center in an effort to help the backlog of crime evidence waiting for forensic testing.
District Attorney Morgan Gire said they are currently waiting anywhere from nine months to a year to get forensic lab test results back on crime evidence.
They currently partner with the California Department of Justice to analyze all the Placer County District Attorney's forensic evidence, but they would be partnering with the California State University system for the new crime lab.
"This forensic crime lab will not only address this issue for our county, but for the region as well – positioning Placer County, once again, as a leader through collaboration and innovation in criminal justice. We believe this project will be a flagship program for our region, state and the nation," Gire said.
In 2015, the creation of a forensic crime laboratory was identified as a top priority in the Placer County Criminal Justice Master Plan.
