Southbound I-5 in Lathrop reopens after police chase ends with officer shooting man

Officials say the suspect got out of his car and "attempted to carjack a vehicle" when an officer shot him.

LATHROP, Calif. — All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 were closed for most of Saturday in Lathrop after a police chase ended with officers shooting a man, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officials say the entire situation began around 12:35 p.m. Saturday when Lathrop Police Department officers were chasing a man wanted for domestic violence. It is unclear how the chase began.

CHP says the man, driving a Nissan Sedan, drove southbound on I-5 from Roth Road until his car stopped working and he pulled over just south of Lathrop Road. Officials say the suspect then got out of his car and "attempted to carjack a vehicle" when an officer shot him.

The man was arrested and taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. Officials say he is expected to survive. No civilians or officers were injured.

The Lathrop Police Department said in a Sunday update the man was identified as 40-year-old Manteca resident, Juan Valdez, who was wanted in connection to a domestic violence incident that happened in Lathrop.

Michael Ovando says the suspect tried to steal his 2020 Honda Accord Sport as he was on his way to work.

"Next thing I know he pulls off behind me, gets out of his car tries to get in my car," said Ovando, who pulled over when he saw the police cars.

He says his car has an auto-lock, which prevented the suspect from opening his door.

"Next thing I know, police cars hit my car. He got over to the passenger side trying to get in and next thing I know shots were fired," said Ovando.

He says he just recently got his car out of the shop and now police have it in evidence.

"It has definitely been a crazy start to my year," said Ovando.

While Caltrans officials said the road would be open around 4 p.m., CHP said they expected to be out there "for a while," according to CHP spokesperson Ruben Jones. The roads officially reopened around 8 p.m.

CHP is handling the shooting investigation and no other information is available at this time.
