'She has played a horrific role': 2nd suspect in Homewood homicide pleads not guilty

The victim's daughter appeared in court to make an impact statement.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — Samantha Scott made her first court appearance in Placer County, pleading not guilty to charges including homicide and attempted murder.

Scott and former Major League Baseball pitcher Daniel Serafini were both accused of killing Serafini's father-in-law, Robert Gary Spohr, and the attempted murder of the victim's wife, Wendy Wood.

Scott was denied bail in her first court appearance. Serafini was in court last week, pleading not guilty to his charges as well.

Both Spohr and Wood were shot at their home in Homewood in 2021. Spohr died in the shooting, but Wood survived. However, her family said she took her life earlier this year, adding they hold the shooter responsible for her death.

Adrienne Spohr, the younger daughter of Robert Spohr, was in attendance to provide an impact statement at Scott's court appearance.

She said she was concerned Scott could have be granted bail and wanted to address her directly.

"She has played a horrific role, and I wanted to be able to look her in the eyes and address her for that," said Spohr.

Spohr said she's thankful for law enforcement following through on the case and holding someone responsible for the crime.

"Samantha Scott should not be in the community, and I think that the truth will come out. I believe that Samantha Scott is guilty," said Spohr.

If convicted, Samantha Scott faces 25 years to life behind bars.
