Police identify man who drove four hours to Mount Shasta and admitted to killing 2 juveniles, 2 adults | UPDATE

The 4 victims were identified only as 2 juveniles and 2 adults, one of whom was a man found in Shankar Hangud's car. The other three victims were found in Roseville.

ROSEVILLE, Calif — UPDATE: 6:40 p.m.

The man who drove more than 200 miles to Mount Shasta before admitting to police that he killed four people inside of a Roseville apartment was identified as 53-year-old Shankar Hangud, officials confirmed at a Tuesday press conference.

Roseville Police Captain Josh Simon said investigators are still trying to piece together the timeline that led Hangud from the Roseville apartment complex in the 1800 block of Junction Boulevard to the Mount Shasta Police Department nearly four hours away with a body in his car.

Simon identified the four victims only as two juveniles and two adults, one of whom was a man found in Hangud's car. The other three victims were later found at the apartment in Roseville.

People who live at the Carmel at Woodcreek West apartment complex in Roseville say they never expected for something so tragic to happen in this neighborhood.

“I took a walk over there and saw all the tape and stuff and it’s very sad," says Mark Dutton.

Dee Young says it may be time to move out of the complex.

“Am I in the right location should I be moving. A quadruple murder that is big, that’s crazy," says Young.

Simon said Hangud's exact relation to the victims is unclear, but added that they believe they are all family members. "We have to wait for the coroner to confirm that," Simon said.

"[We'll find the] motive ... as a result of the investigation," Simon said. "We are less than 24 hours into the investigation. There are a lot of stones that need to be unturned (sic) to see what led the suspect to do what he did."

Hangud was arrested in Mount Shasta and later booked into the Placer County Jail on four counts of murder.

Parents from Silverado Middle School received an email from the Dry Creek Unified School District saying in part that they believe one of the victims may have been a student from the school.

The Dry Creek Unified School District later sent ABC10 this statement:

"A parent/guardian letter did go out today stating we believe one of the juvenile victims in this tragedy may be one of our students based on the information received while working with authorities. I want to be clear that this is pending confirmation from the autopsy as per the most recent Roseville Police Department press conference that occurred today at 10:30 AM. We are devastated that a member of our Silverado and Dry Creek family is believed to be a victim and are doing everything we can to help students and staff as we grieve and process this event together. We have a full team of mental healthcare professionals onsite to ensure all students and staff who need care are able to receive it. Our sincere thoughts are with the family at this time."

Anyone with information regarding this incident, or who saw Shankar Hangud at any point during the past week, can call the Roseville Police Department at (916) 774-5000.

ABC10 will update this story as more information becomes available.

A man drove to Siskiyou County Monday afternoon, walked into the Mount Shasta Police Department and admitted to killing four people inside of a home 225 miles away, officials confirmed.

The unidentified suspect drove to the police station with the body of one of the victims inside the trunk of his car, Roseville Police Captain Josh Simon said. The other three victims were later found inside of the man's apartment in the 1800 block of Junction Boulevard in Roseville.

"I don't think we're crossing anything off the list, because there is this distance between the two jurisdictions," Simon said at a press conference Monday. "The detectives both at the scene here and in Mount Shasta are really trying to backtrack and figure out are there additional crimes committed — are there additional scenes."

The identities of victims and the suspect have not been released. It's unclear what the suspect has be charged with, or if he's been charged at all.

The Roseville Police Department is expected to give an update early Tuesday morning during a press conference.
