Patrols, security increased after gun accidently fired in Arden Fair Mall

Shoppers are being careful with how much time they spend in the mall after Sacramento police said a gun accidentally was fired.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sunday business resumed back to normal at Arden Fair Mall after panicked moments for shoppers. Sacramento Police Department said someone brought a loaded gun and accidentally fired it Saturday evening.

Police and mall security beefed up patrols as shoppers checked off their lists for Christmas.

“It is kind of crowded in there,” said Amber Zulueta, Arden Mall shopper. “So, I just kind of got in and got out.”

That was the name of the game for some, especially for Christy Wade.

“It was nice. I went into Forever 21 and got what I wanted. That was all for me,” said Wade. “I heard about what happened yesterday (Saturday). Just kind of wanted to get in and get out.”

Shoppers were careful with how much time they spent in the mall after Sacramento police said a gun was accidentally fired. Police determined that after reviewing video surveillance.

A 22-year-old man suffered "minor injuries,” because of the "shrapnel from that bullet.

Shoppers during the ordeal described it as an active shooter situation.

Security was on top of mind for many. Sacramento police had patrols in and around the mall.

“In conjunction with the Arden Fair Mall, we have both agreed to increase our security presence both in the parking lot and increase the officers we have working here,” said Officer Cody Tapley, spokesperson with Sacramento Police Department.

Officer Tapley said there is no update on the accidental shooting, but they are reviewing surveillance cameras to catch the two suspects.

“Those events are extremely overwhelming, stressful, scary, and rapidly evolving, so we encourage people to be vigilant. If you see something, say something. Be aware of your surroundings, especially this holiday season,” said Tapley.

Police said the victim was not transported to the hospital, and the gun was not pointed a person when it was fired.
