SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man accidentally shot his wife after both of them heard a noise in the middle of the night, deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, Rubin Ramirez allegedly called authorities to report that he accidentally shot his wife in their home in the 9400 block of Mira Del Rio Drive.

Deputies went to the house and found the man's wife in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to her shoulder.

Both Ramirez and his wife reportedly told deputies independently that they heard a noise in the middle of the night. Ramirez allegedly got out his gun after hearing the noise and accidentally discharged it.

Investigators said they found no evidence of a struggle or of domestic violence factors after canvassing the home.

Deputies booked Ramirez into Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm. Medics took his wife to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Ramirez is expected to appear in court on Jan. 3.
