Man accused of attempted murder in Elk Grove

Police said the man pulled out a knife after knocking down a person walking their dog.

ELK GROVE, Calif — A man is behind bars on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly attacking someone in Elk Grove.

The Elk Grove Police Department said the attack happened along the 9200 block of Malheur Way around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

"Officers learned the victim was walking their dog when the suspect, unbeknownst to the victim, knocked the victim down, got on top of the victim, and pulled out a knife," police said on Facebook.

However, the attacker took off after a county employee passed by in a car and honked their horn.

Police were able to get video of the suspect and the attack, and based on the description and behavior, they suspected Nicholas Sagario in the attack. Police said he had an active warrant for his arrest related to battery on a peace officer.

Sagario and his brother Matthew were both detained, but police said they ultimately identified Matthew Sagario as the suspect in the attack, evening finding evidence that linked him to it.

Police said Nicholas Sagario was not involved in the attack, but he was arrested and booked into jail for his outstanding warrant.

Matthew Sagario was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was booked into the county jail.
