SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One person was arrested following a wild chase with police and sheriff’s deputies from Rancho Cordova and Folsom to Sacramento, Thursday afternoon.
It started around 4:40 p.m. after two Rancho Cordova Police officers say they spotted a man sitting in an SUV with a pair of binoculars in the parking lot of the Days Inn located off Mather Field Road.
According to police, when the officers went to speak with the man they noticed he had a handle-bottle of vodka sitting in the center console of the vehicle. As the officers approached, they say the man started revving his engine, then threw the SUV in reverse, narrowly missing one of the officers.
The man led police up Folsom Boulevard into the City of Folsom, then onto westbound Highway 50 and into Sacramento before exiting southbound onto Power Inn Road.
At some point during the chase, Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies joined. The pursuit ended near Power Inn Road and Industrial Parkway, the man’s SUV severely damaged and boxed in by multiple law enforcement vehicles.
Mohammad Mishal, owner of Red Line Motor Sports, a business located on Industrial Parkway, was outside his business as the chase ended up on his street.
“This street is a dead end. So as soon as he made a U-turn, he hit the first cop car and he kept on going and he hit another cop car and that's when he hit one of our cars,” Mishal told ABC10.
Despite being cornered, authorities say the man refused to surrender. It was at this point that deputies and police officers dashed in and started smashing the windows of the SUV in an effort to remove him from the SUV. A K9 was also released into the vehicle to help subdue the man. Eventually, authorities were able to get him out and under arrest.
“Police officers were on the side of the car, on top of the car, trying to break the windshield, trying to pull him out,” Mishal said. “Eventually, they broke the windshield and they broke the roof and they got him out.”
Two officers sustained minor injuries from broken glass. The man suffered injuries from being bitten by the K9.
Police say the man, who has not yet been identified, was arrested on complaints of driving under the influence and felony evasion.
