Man convicted in 2022 Antelope DUI crash that left child paralyzed

Prosecutors say the child was left paralyzed in her lower body and she recently regained movement in her upper body.

ANTELOPE, Calif. — A man under the influence of meth who crashed a stolen truck into a family’s car in 2022 in Antelope has been convicted.

According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, a jury convicted John Hayden Hart of felony DUI causing injury, and felony vehicle theft.

Prosecutors say Hart was driving a stolen truck while under the influence of meth and fentanyl on Oct. 24, 2022.

He was speeding on Roseville Road during a police chase when he crashed head-on into a Toyota Solara. The impact of the crash sent the truck Hart was driving onto the roof of a nearby home.

The people inside the Solara, a 4-year-old and her parents, were on their way to preschool and suffered major injuries.

Prosecutors say the 4-year-old had multiple spine fractures causing permanent paralysis to her lower body. She has limited movement in her upper body and only recently began to speak and eat. She still needs a tracheostomy tube to breathe.

Her parents had broken legs and broken ribs.

Hart faces a maximum of 32 years and four months in prison. He will be sentenced Aug. 16.
