Man convicted in killing of Sierra College football player. He could face life in prison

Sean Hardy was convicted of murder in the 2019 killing of Chancelor Colbert, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office said.

FAIR OAKS, Calif — A man was convicted of murder Wednesday in a 2019 case in which a Sierra College football player was shot in the back and died, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Sean Hardy was convicted of second-degree murder by a jury in the 2019 killing of Chancelor Colbert, the DA’s office said. Second-degree murder means it was not premeditated, according to California law. Hardy was also convicted of a felony firearm possession charge.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the 11000 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard over the weekend of July 20, 2019, after receiving a report of shots fired at a house party, ABC10 previously reported.

When they arrived, deputies said they found Colbert in the road suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

“(Colbert) went to a party that was posted on social media and grew larger than expected,” the DA’s office said. “When a fight broke out at the party, Hardy shot two times in the air with his gun, and everyone ran out of the house to leave.”

Colbert got into the car and realized one of his friends was missing, so he went back to look for his friend and encountered another fight that broke out on the street, the office said.

“When the victim tried to break up the fight, Hardy took a swing at him and missed,” the DA’s office said. “Hardy then pulled out his gun and shot at the victim four times as the victim tried to run away.”

Colbert was hit once in the back and died from his injuries at the hospital. Colbert was a football player at Sierra College

Hardy is scheduled to be sentenced June 7 and he will appear before Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Steve White.

Hardy could face a maximum sentence of 43 years to life in prison, according to the DA.
