65-year-old man dies in Antelope after being hit by alleged DUI driver

The man was walking through traffic lanes when he was struck and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the California Highway Patrol.

ANTELOPE, Calif. —

A 65-year-old man died after being hit by a car in Antelope early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened on Walerga Road near Elverta Road around 12:35 a.m. on Sunday. CHP said the man was walking through traffic lanes when he was hit by a 1999 Toyota Corolla that was heading southbound on Walerga. 

The man was pronounced dead about 10 minutes later by the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department.

The driver of the Corolla, only identified as a 25-year-old man from Rocklin, stayed on scene and cooperated with officers. Police said he was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The southbound lanes of Walerga road were closed for a little over an hour while law enforcement investigated the scene. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
