MODESTO, Calif. — Police found gambling machines, psilocybin mushrooms, flavored tobacco, marihuana and more after cracking down on illegal tobacco and cannabis sales in Modesto.

According to the Modesto Police Department, their officers followed up on complaints surrounding flavored tobacco and cannabis-infused products. Some of the items include edibles made to look like version of other products that target youth.

Officials said two notices were sent out calling on businesses to stop if they were selling any illegal products.

Eventually, compliance checks were done at the following sites:

- West Side Smoke Shop, 506 Paradise (near a park and high school)
- J’s Smoke Shop, 2019 Yosemite
- Smoke City, 2015 #B and 2015 #A Yosemite Blvd.
- Maze Smoke Shop, 101 Maze Blvd.
- Smoking Jay’s, 302 McHenry
- Smoke City, 1601 Yosemite Blvd. #H

Police said the operation resulted in eight arrests and saw $10,000 seized from illegal gambling activities. According to police, 10 gambling machines were also confiscated along with thousands of dollars worth of illegal products. Safety violations were also found at all six locations.

"This result was a direct reflection of our community's needs. The police department had received multiple complaints from local business owners, from community members from neighborhoods from schools regarding the targeting of our youth in our community. And that is why we did this," said Sgt. Kalani Souza, spokesperson for Modesto Police Department, in a video news release.
