NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — A homicide suspect shot himself after killing his girlfriend in Nevada County, deputies said.
The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said the homicide happened at a home along the 12000 block of Half Moon Way in Nevada City Saturday. Deputies responded just after 5 p.m. to a report from the victim's relative, who arrived home and found 58-year-old year Mary Moran dead from a gunshot wound.
Deputies identified the suspect as 64-year-old Kenneth Breining, Moran's boyfriend. However, he wasn't found at the scene.
A search started for the suspect and the victim's vehicle, which was missing from the home. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies got involved after Nevada County Sheriff's deputies learned the suspect could have driven to the Sacramento area.
Around 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning, deputies in Nevada County were contacted by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office after a reported shooting at a home along Pasadena Avenue in Sacramento County. The suspect was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, but he was still alive and taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.
The victim's vehicle was found at the Pasadena Avenue home and recovered for evidence.
The case remains under investigation.
