Newman police arrest minor in connection with social media school shooting threat

The minor's charges include criminal threats.

NEWMAN, Calif. — A minor in Newman was arrested in connection with a social media post threatening schools in Stanislaus County.

The Newman Police Department says the post was about a planned school shooting and named several schools on the west side of Stanislaus County. It's not clear which schools were named.

After an investigation by police, the minor was identified as the suspect and arrested Friday on suspicion of criminal threats and 71 PC, threats to public employees, public officers, school employees or officers.

"We have, and will continue to have, zero tolerance for threats such as these which instill fear in our community, and we will seek prosecution to the fullest extent of the law," Newman Police Department said.

The Patterson Joint Unified School District confirmed with ABC10 that their schools were among those threatened by the minor.

School officials said the minor didn't have the ability to follow through on the threat and appeared to be focused on disruption.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said their office will pursue the same charges for threats made to the city of Patterson.
