Guns, drugs seized from North Sacramento homeless camps over past weeks

Police said 12 people were also arrested for several offenses.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Several arrests were made along with seizures of guns and drugs at homeless camps in North Sacramento over the past several weeks.

According to Sacramento Police Department, officers were addressing community complaints of crime in homeless camps along the bike trail east of Rio Linda Boulevard and north of Interstate 80.

Over the past several weeks, police seized items including, a loaded .45 caliber handgun, loaded privately manufactured handgun with high-capacity magazine, a pellet rifle and a zip-gun made from a staple, wrench and pipe, which also had a spent round and live round.

Outside of guns, police also seized 26 grams of fentanyl, 20 grams of amphetamines, narcotics packaging and multiple pipes and syringes.

In total, 12 people were arrested for various offenses.

"It was so emotional when they finally got the people out of here," said Angela Miles, who lives near the camp and said her and her neighbors call to 311 went unanswered for several years. “There was 23 tents out here at that time. They arrested twelve people, cited three people. That is more than half of the people out here were criminals. That is what we were reporting the whole time. We are saying these people are not just people that fell on hard times. There is illicit activity.”

ABC10 has aired reports about neighbors’ frustration with the camp.

Neighbor says they are looking to hire private security to help keep criminal activity away from the trail.
