SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol is investigating an accident where a woman was impaled by a metal bar on Highway 99.
According to the CHP, a couple was driving northbound on Highway 99 behind an unmarked semi hauling large metal bars.
Just after 10 a.m., as they were approaching the exit to Fruitridge Road, one of the bars seemed to have fell from the semi, bounced up on the highway, then pierced through the engine compartment and into the passenger side floorboard.
The bar impaled the front seat passenger through the right leg.

The driver exited the highway and called 911, but the semi driver continued on, seemingly oblivious to what had happened.
First responders were called out to treat the injured passenger. That person was taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to CHP. Neither the driver nor the passenger has been identified.
Authorities are asking anyone who might have been driving in the area and witnessed this incident, or anyone who might have an idea of the location of the semi, to call Officer Jim Young at 916-681-2300.
(Editor's Note - An earlier version of this article indicated the metal bar came from the back of a semi-truck. On Monday, the CHP told us that it's investigators haven't confirmed if it fell off the truck, as initially reported, or the truck hit it and it bounced up and hit the car.)
