Placerville woman sentenced for killing boyfriend in DUI crash from 2022

She was intoxicated and didn’t tell police she had a passenger. He was reported missing the next day, and his body was found in some bushes near the crash site.

PLACERVILLE, Calif — A woman accused of killing her boyfriend in a 2022 DUI crash was sentenced to 10 years in state prison, the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

On Oct. 7, El Dorado County Judge Mark Ralphs sentenced 37-year-old Erica Lynn Chambers, of Placerville, to serve 10 years for killing her boyfriend, Mason Visman. She pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing injury and hit-and-run charges, the district attorney’s office said.

After attending a family wedding on Nov. 11, 2022, Chambers was driving with Visman in a Mercedes SUV along Highway 50 near the Mosquito Road exit in Placerville, the district attorney’s office said.

She rear-ended a Toyota Prius and then collided with a guardrail. The Toyota’s occupants suffered minor injuries. Visman was ejected through an open window and killed instantly.

The district attorney's office said Chambers attempted to drive away, but the vehicle was heavily damaged. She reportedly traveled several hundred yards before she got out of the car and collapsed.

Chambers was highly intoxicated and didn't tell police she had a passenger in the vehicle, according to law enforcement. Only after Visman was reported missing the next day was his body discovered near the crash site by a passerby. His body was found in some bushes, ABC10 previously reported.

Chambers was charged with manslaughter in December 2022.
