Sacramento police investigating after man dies in custody during welfare check

Officers were called to the 3600 block of Jasmine Street in East Del Paso Heights around 4:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on a man in his 50s.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Police are investigating after a man died in custody Tuesday during a welfare check, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Sgt. Dan Wiseman with the Sacramento Police Department said officers were called to the 3600 block of Jasmine Street in East Del Paso Heights around 4:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on a man, who a family member said was threatening to harm himself and was under the influence of narcotics.

Sacramento police say the man, a 51-year-old, was in the street with a knife when officers arrived. Police say he then threw the knife into the street and ran away before getting into a parked vehicle nearby.

Police say they were able to remove the man from the vehicle "without force" sometime later but didn't specify how long he was in the car. The man was detained and put in the back of a patrol car. According to the police department, officers requested the Sacramento Fire Department respond and evaluate the man.

Officers say the man became "unresponsive" and fire officials performed emergency medical aid. The man was taken to a hospital where he died. The man's name hasn't been released.

An investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
