SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The first of several preliminary hearings for the K Street shooting suspects happened Friday. Family members of the shooting victims were present to see and hear what witnesses had to say about the April 2022 shooting that killed 6 people and injured 12 more.
Most of the hearing involved conversations with Sacramento Police Department officers and how they responded to the scene and victims.
For the first time since the shooting, some families watched video and looked at pictures of the loved ones lost that day. It caused mothers to cry, one to faint, which put the hearing on pause until she was helped.
The founder of Empact, an advocate for the families involved, says it’s a difficult time because victims' families are seeing things they hadn’t before.
“Emotions are high, which is understandable, and there's a fear factor,” said Leia Schenk, founder of Empact. “Some of these families have never been in the same room and they’re going to hear some things that are going to cause them to feel some very high emotions."
Fred Harris, father of victim Sergio Harris, says it’s a waiting game until they can get justice — something he says is important.
Preliminary hearings will resume next Friday at 10 a.m. where more witnesses are expected to give their testimony.
