SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Police Department is seeking the publics help after a homicide case has gone cold.
Ahmad “Neru” Hempstead was brutally killed in November of 2020 while on the job remodeling an apartment unit on La Pera Court in South Sacramento, near the neighborhood of Meadowview.
Family and friends gathered Saturday evening, on Hempstead’s birthday, at Tahoe Park celebrating Hempstead’s light, love and legacy and hoping the public help find whoever killed him.
“He was always trying to spread his knowledge,” said Ahmad Hempstead Jr., the victim’s oldest son.
“He was an honorable father, and brother. The way he was taken from us is just a tragedy. And we need answers,” said Tonya Hempstead, the victim’s sister.
The tight-knit family is heartbroken and still searching for answers regarding who killed the 48-year-old.
Hempstead was a former professional boxer who also worked as a handy man.
The Sacramento Police Department says Hempstead was brutally murdered while at a job. Police found the 48-year-old’s body inside an empty apartment on La Pera Court. His family says he was renovating the apartment when he was attacked.
“He was working in broad daylight and there are still no answers,” said Tonya Hempstead.
Those close to the investigation and the family are releasing for the first time the details about the weapon used in the murder.
“He was brutally stabbed in the back with a large machete type knife,” said Atiya Hempstead, the victim’s sister.
The family is pleading with the community to help find whoever murdered Hempstead and help provide them with some closure.
“What if this was your brother, your father, your loved one? Would you just let it go by not saying anything?” said Tonya Hempstead. “Like, he never was here. We cannot do that and we are not going to do that. We are going to stand for my brother until we find closure.”
Anyone with information regarding Hempstead's death is asked by police to call the Sacramento Police Department at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Callers can remain anonymous, and a reward is being offered. Anonymous tips can also be submitted here.
