SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Arden Fair mall has resumed normal business after an accidental shooting happened around 7 p.m., according to Sacramento Police Department officials.
Cody Tapley, spokesperson for the department, says officers responded to the scene after multiple reports of hearing gunfire in the mall. Once on scene, officers and mall security were able to locate "evidence of a shooting" on the second floor.
"It was a rush mob. It definitely was. It looks like an active shooting thing," said shopper Jeffery Powell who was waiting in line to take family photos with Santa. "[People were] going around the backside, standing outside, evacuating from the other stores and they were locking up the windows."
While the investigation is early, police believe the shooting was a gun accidentally going off.
"No firearm was actually brandished, there was no disturbance or altercation proceeding the discharge of the firearm," said Tapley. "We believe that there was no intended direct victims."
A 22-year-old man with "very minor injuries" was found by officers on the scene, potentially as a result of the "shrapnel from that bullet," according to Tapley.
Police say there are two suspects who ran from the mall after the gunshot. No one is in custody at this time and an investigation is ongoing.
"Arden Fair thanks the Sacramento Police Department for their support and will have an increased police and security presence during the holiday season," said Nathan Spradlin, Marketing Director of Arden Fair.
