Man shot by officer did not have weapon on him when taken into custody, Sacramento police say | UPDATE

Santino Marez was taken into custody on an outstanding firearm possession warrant and after allegedly preventing police from performing duties by violence or force.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — The man wounded after being shot by police Saturday afternoon near North Sacramento did not have a weapon found on him when he was taken into custody, authorities said.

Santino Marez, 39 of Sacramento, was released from the hospital and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail in connection with using violence or force to prevent an officer from performing duties and an outstanding felony, no-bail warrant associated with being a prohibited person in possession of a gun, the Sacramento Police Department said Sunday.

Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement said officers investigated a vehicle with suspended registration near Beloit Drive and Bell Avenue. Marez was believed to be associated with the car, and he allegedly abandoned it before officers contacted him, police said.

Officers reportedly found Marez trying to hide on the roof of a nearby RV, according to law enforcement.

“Officers verbally contacted the individual who spontaneously jumped from the top of the RV in an attempt to flee,” police said in a social media news release. “Officers attempted to detain the individual and during that time an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Police said no weapon was found on Marez at the time he was taken into custody. An officer sustained minor injuries during the incident, according to law enforcement.

Police reportedly provided emergency medical aid, and Marez was transported to the hospital where he was in stable condition Saturday night.

Several department units, including the homicide division, are looking into the incident.

“The investigation will focus on policy, tactics and training as it relates to the use of force,” the department said.

The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office are reportedly monitoring the investigation. All video and audio associated with the incident will be released to the public within 30 days, per local and state policies.
