SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A boy is in the hospital after a hit-and-run driver caused a collision with a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy's vehicle.
A spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened at Franklin Boulevard and Brookfield Drive around 10:15 p.m.
Officials said the deputy was heading north on Franklin through a green light when a southbound car tried to turn east onto Brookfield against a red light. The deputy's K9 vehicle was hit as a result.
Deputies said it appears the force of the crash pushed the K9 vehicle toward a father and son standing on the corner of the road. The son was hit and described as conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle involved left the area and deputies were searching Sunday night. The man suspected of driving the vehicle turned himself in at the Sacramento County Main Jail, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said Monday. He was identified as 23-year-old Damariae Daniel, the sheriff's office said.
The Sacramento Police Department will be the primary agency investigating the crash since it happened in the city.
