SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — More than six months after officers detained and towed 88 cars in a February sideshow, 87 of them still remain impounded.
The large sideshow happened in Stockton, and it saw the sheriff's office block off Country Club Boulevard while crowds of people were detained and guarded by deputies with non-lethal weapons.
The sheriff's office characterized the response as part of a sideshow task force mission. According to authorities, deputies infiltrated a sideshow group to find out locations ahead of some planned events.
Out of those 88 cars that were towed away, only one was let go and returned to the owner after officials learned it wasn't involved in the sideshow.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office told ABC10 the other 87 remain in their possession as the cases wait for an official decision from a judge.
Generally, people who participate in a sideshow can face criminal charges, fines and get their car impounded. There are also laws in place where spectators could also face penalties.
