2 arrested in Aero Fire evacuation zone, suspected of mail theft

A search of a 'suspicious' car found stolen mail from homes in Copperopolis, methamphetamine and burglary tools.

CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. — Two men from Stockton were arrested inside of a Calaveras County fire evacuation area early Wednesday morning, according to officials.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office said, while patrolling the Aero Fire evacuation area with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, they spotted a suspicious car around 2:45 a.m. and stopped it.

Once stopped, deputies said a search of the car found stolen mail from homes in Copperopolis, methamphetamine and burglary tools.

Officials identified the suspects as two brothers from Stockton, 38-year-old Joseph Nobriga and 31-year-old Mark Nobriga.

Joseph Nobriga had two outstanding warrants for his arrest for vehicle theft and possessing stolen property out of San Joaquin County while Mark Nobriga was on probation from San Joaquin County.

Both men were arrested and booked on suspicion of multiple charges including: driving on a suspended license, conspiracy to commit a crime, entering a disaster area, possession of a controlled substance and mail theft.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office announced some evacuation orders were lifted and residents are returning to their homes, but patrols and an increased law enforcement presence will continue.
