Stockton police release body camera video of officer shooting, killing man

The shooting happened Sept. 11 near the 1700 block of Fremont Street around 10 p.m.

STOCKTON, Calif. — The Stockton Police Department released video Thursday showing two officers shooting and killing a man they believed was armed with a gun Sept. 11.

Officers were called to the 1700 block of Fremont Street around 10 p.m. for a man who had tried to kick down a door before climbing into the building through a broken window. The video released by officials includes two 911 calls about the incident.

The 911 caller says he tried to check on the man, identified as 31-year-old Jory Jamarr Lester from Stockton, when he saw a gun "as long as his leg." The gun was later confirmed to be a replica firearm.

Two officers responded to the scene just after 10 p.m. and saw Lester outside of the building. After trying to get his attention by turning on a flashlight and pointing it at him, the officers told Lester to show his hands and stop walking away from them.

Lester continued walking away then reached for something in his pants while facing the officers.

Officer Marcos Alonso, hired Nov. 2020 and assigned to Field Operations, shot multiple times at Lester who was later pronounced dead at the scene. Alonso was previously involved in another deadly police shooting at a Stockton gas station in Jan. 2023.

The shooting is under investigation by multiple agencies. No further information is available at this time.
