Video: Suspect shot by police clung to door of car on I-5 in attempted carjacking

New video shows the moments a man tried to carjack someone and dangled from the side of the door as it tried to get away on I-5.

LATHROP, Calif. — Lathrop police released new video footage in a chase that turned into an attempted carjacking and shooting along Interstate 5.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident started around 12:35 p.m. on Jan. 27.

According to a dispatch call released by police, a woman called police for a friend on Shadywood Avenue and reported that her friend and her friend's daughter were in danger and had received death threats.

Police sent officers to Shadywood Avenue for a welfare check, and an officer could be seen approaching the victims in body camera video. The officer asks the victims why they were running from "John," to which they said he's "psychotic" and needs help.

An officer tried to talk to the suspect and asked about what's going on, but it led to a brief chase. The suspect briefly stops and is told to turn off his car. Officers can be heard describing the suspect on video as "extremely uncooperative."

The suspect takes off once again with police behind him, heading onto westbound Roth Road where dash camera video shows him driving into the opposing lanes of traffic. Police try to stop him in the car, but he gets away and drives onto southbound Interstate 5.

During the chase, the suspect's tire falls apart and he comes to a stop on the right shoulder of the road. However, the suspect then tries to run away and carjack another person. He's seen dangling from the side of the door as the carjacking victim tries to drive away.

The car pulls over to the side of the road, and the suspect runs around to the passenger side. Meanwhile, an officer runs toward the suspect, telling him that he's going to get shot. The officer then proceeds to shoot, and the suspect falls to the ground.

Police provided first aid for the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Juan Valdez of Manteca. He was ultimately released and booked for felony carjacking, false imprisonment, evasion, resisting arrest, committing a felony while on parole.
