TRACY, Calif. — A Tracy man previously arrested in connection with drug charges in a fentanyl overdose case was arrested again Wednesday at a Manteca courthouse and faces murder charges.

Just before 9 a.m., officers arrested Antonee Dejon Haines, 41, at San Joaquin County Superior Court as a result of a months-long fentanyl overdose death investigation, according to a news release from the Tracy Police Department.

In May 2023, Travis Gassaway, 39 of Tracy, was found dead at home by family members, police said. Officers allegedly found evidence at the scene suggesting Gassaway died from an overdose “from a counterfeit prescription pill containing fentanyl,” the release said.

Haines was served a search warrant and arrested in connection with drug charges in August 2023, the department said.

Officials said a search of Haines’ residence led to 367 pills suspected to contain fentanyl, 684 pills suspected to contain Adderall, 124 pills suspected to contain alprazolam or Xanax, 9 pounds of marijuana, suspected Psilocybin mushrooms and ammunition being seized, according to law enforcement.

Continued investigation by the department and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office ultimately led to Haines’ second arrest, police said.

Haines’ arrest Wednesday underscores the “grave consequences” of a larger fentanyl crisis, according to Sekou Millington, the Tracy Police Department’s chief.

“This case reveals the dangerous intersection of drug distribution and fatal outcomes,” Millington said in a statement. “Our relentless pursuit of justice aims to send a strong message that those responsible for distributing lethal substances will be held accountable for the devastating impact they have on individuals and families in our community."

Records show Haines was booked into San Joaquin County Jail just after 10 a.m. Wednesday. He is ineligible for bail and expected to appear Thursday afternoon in San Joaquin County Superior Court, jail records show.
