1 dead, 2 hurt in Sutter County suspected DUI crash

The crash happened on Highways 99 and 20 around 10 p.m. Sunday.

YUBA CITY, Calif. — One person was killed and two were injured in a nearly head-on and suspected DUI crash in Sutter County Sunday, according to the officials.

The crash happened on Highways 99 and 20 around 10 p.m. The Yuba City Police Department says they were called to the area about a car that had rolled off the embankment in the area.

Officials say they found a BMW with driver James Terry, 46, and passenger Shawna Loyd, 46, inside and a Honda with Malyanh Soulinthone, 19, down the embankment.

Soulinthone was pronounced dead at the scene and officials say evidence at the scene suggest alcohol was in her car at the time of the crash.

Their investigation also showed the BMW was traveling at about 50 mph northbound on 99, and the Honda was driving southbound at an unknown speed, possibly without headlights, before crossing over into oncoming traffic. The BMW hit the passenger side of the Honda, sending it over the east embankment.

Terry and Loyd were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and released the same night.

No further information is available at this time.
