Teen sentenced as juvenile offender after killing stepfather

A judge committed Reid Butler to the Division of Juvenile Justice until the age of 25 after he admitted to killing his stepdad in 2017.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — A teenager who killed his stepfather in El Dorado County was sentenced to the Division of Juvenile Justice until the age of 25.

According to the El Dorado County District Attorney's office, in April of 2017, Reid Butler, 16 at the time, was sent home from school and punished by his stepfather for getting into trouble. Officials say Butler had to do yardwork, but, at one point, he went through an open window into his parents room and got a gun.

The DA's office said he walked up behind his stepfather and shot him in the back of the head. He later left the home in his stepfather's truck and spent the rest of the day with his friends, according to the DA's office.

The matter was adjudicated as a juvenile offense.

Butler admitted to committing the crime on May 31. He was sentenced on Nov. 14.
